Pronunciation – /e/ vs /ə/
When looking up the pronunciation of new words, learners may encounter these two IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) symbols which look like flipped versions of the same symbol. It’s important to be able to distinguish their pronunciations, however.

/e/ – pronounced similar to the ‘ay’ in ‘say’, but without the final tongue movement |
thé /te/ |

e |
/ə/ – pronounced with a relaxed tongue position, as the ‘a’ in ‘about’ – especially common at the end of one-syllable words |
te /tə/ |
Making sure that there’s a clear difference between the pronunciation of ‘je’ and ‘j’ai’ will go a long way in being understood in French.
